A Successful Farmer Would Have a House With...

  • 3 slightly large bedrooms- The were used just as bedrooms are today; to sleep in. The only difference is the rooms were more private. These rooms would never be seen by guests. This house has 1 bedroom for parents, 1 bedroom for sisters, and 1 bedroom for brothers. The parents room would be the largest while the two children rooms would be slightly smaller. The parents room would also be nicer. This room is necessary because everyone needs somewhere to sleep. The bedrooms would be upstairs.
  • external image Picture%20074.jpg This bedroom if fitting for a successful farmer's home because it is nice but not extremely ornate. This would be more like the parents room and the children's rooms would be smaller and probably less fancy. There is a fireplace in the room which shows they can afford not only one fireplace but a fireplace in every room. The red cloth around the bed shows they have enough wealth to buy red dye. The wooden walls are also not painted which keeps it more like a farmhouse and less like a fancy town house.

  • 1 small guestroom- A guestroom would be like a bedroom for any people that came to the home that did not live there. This home only has one guestroom because they would rarely have guests on the farm. This would not be as big as the parents room but nicer than the children's rooms. The room would be needed to show any wealth to the guests. This is necessary because guests were important in that time and most of the time guests come from far away. This would make it hard for people to go home right away so they would stay for long periods of time and they would need somewhere to sleep. This room would be in the back of the house on the first level.
  • external image DSC_0314.JPG This guestroom works for this home because it is simple. The bed is a small four-post bed with ropes going between the post with a straw mattress on top. The walls again are wooden which keeps it like a farmhouse. The floor in this picture may be too simple but it is still similar to what a guestroom would have. The flower printed bedspread would also be what a home owner would want to show to the guest.

  • 1 average sized kitchen- The kitchen would be used for cooking meals. Usually the daughters and mother would run the kitchen they would cook breakfast, lunch, and dinner. There is one kitchen in this house. They would cook bread for almost every meal and usually more meat for supper that any other meal. The kitchen is also more of a private room. Homeowners would not want people to see the sometimes messy area where they prepare food. This room is on the first level near the dining room.
  • external image DSC_0114.JPG This home would have a kitchen almost exactly like this. The oven looks small but it is actually for bread. The pots and pans are cast iron which shows the wealth of the family. A successful farmer would also have the nice table with nice bowls and dishes. You can also see how the walls are painted showing the family can buy paint, but it is not a bright color keeping it acceptable for a farm house.

  • 1 small washing room- The washing room was used obviously for washing. The would wash clothes and dishes in tubs of hot water then dry them on either an indoor or outdoor line. This would also be done by girls and the mother. This room was necessary because they always need clean clothes and clean dishes to eat off of. This room would be on the downstairs floor and would be towards the back off of the kitchen. This is so that dishes could easily be taken straight to the wash.
  • external image DSC_0320.JPGexternal image DSC_0321.JPG These pictures both show the wash room and how it would be set up. A successful farmer would have the big fireplace needed to boil water for the dishes. The wall is also painted a somewhat darker color showing the right amount of wealth for this family. There are also many nice bowls, tables, and tools to make the washing process run faster and smoother like a wealthier family would want. There are also glass windows matching the rest of the house.

  • 1 small parlor- This room was an entrance way into the house. This is where guests would be welcomed to the home. Home owners would want to make a good impression on guests by making this room nice. Sometimes guests would eat a "snack" here. This would usually consist of small light things before they ate the real meal. This room was necessary because guests needed an area to be greeted and ,depending on the weather, get indoors. This room would be small in a farmhouse and not very ornate. This room would be right at the front of the house on the first floor.
  • external image DSC_0357.JPG external image DSC_0356.JPG These photos of the parlor are acceptable for a successful farmer because they are really nice, but not extreme. The colors work because they are soft and not intense. The furniture is the right style for a farmhouse because it is simpler. There are a few painting which would be normal for a parlor of this type because they wanted dto show wealth to guests. There is also a fireplace which would be expensive and show wealth.

  • 1 dining room/ entertaining area- This room would be used to eat formal and informal meals. Also it would be a place to entertain guests. after the meal they could move the table for dancing or they could simply sit on the couch and talk. This room would be where guests would go right after leaving the parlor. This room is necessary because the family and guests need somewhere to eat. Also they need an area to sit after the meal and be entertained at any party that they may host. This room would be on the first floor closer to the front but also near the kitchen.
  • external image DSC_0365.JPG This dining room and entertainment area is perfect for a successful farm. The colors are soft which still shows they can afford color but not deep colors. The furniture like the table and the chairs would be intricate like this for formal events and the table would be set like this for formal events. The table and chairs may not be set like this for informal dining but they would still be owned. The couch would be nice for this home because it is good sized. The printed carpet is also something that a successful farmer would want to have in a room like this.

The outside of the house would look similar to this picture. It would be made of wood and a few glass windows.Since it is a farmhouse there wouldn't be any houses around it. The roof would be made with shingles similar to the ones on the roof in this picture. The simple shape would also be common on many farm houses ;even unsuccessful farms.

A successful farm would have a barnyard area like this. The barn would be large because they are slightly wealthy. They would also have an area for raising animals that would be kept nice. The barn is made of wood and is painted which would be acceptable for a successful farm. The fence is also a nice fence that would be used to keep animals in and some for decoration.

A successful farmer would have a pasture similar to this. You can again see The fences that, here, are used for keeping these horses contained. A successful farmer would also be able to afford the horses themselves. These would be work horses that would be accompanied with cows for pulling equipment and transportation.
